Lin, Chen reaches men's last eight, top seed Yamaguchi crashes out at badminton worlds
GLASGOW, Scotland, Aug. 24 (Xinhua) -- Five-time winner Lin Dan and twice defending champion Chen Long both reached the men's quarterfinals of the World Badminton Championships but women's top seed was shocked by fourth seed Chen Yufei here on Thursday.
Lin, nicknamed "Super Dan" by his fans, fought back from one set down to defeat England's Rajiv Ouseph 14-21, 21-17, 21-16.
The seventh-seeded, 33, also a twice Olympic champion, trailed 4-11 in the first and succumbed to the pressure but recovered in the next two sets in time for the victory.
"It was a little tough for me to take hold of the situation in the first set as he started the match so quickly," Lin said.
Ouseph, ranked 20th in the world, was satisfied with his performance. "I thought I had been playing well and yesterday Lin Dan was pushed hard so I knew I had a chance today if I played well.
"He's not quite as good as he was five or six years ago when he was winning back to back Olympics. He's not at the pace he played for three sets back then anymore," said the Englishman.
Lin fought off tenacious challenge from Denmark's Emil Holst in Wednesday's third-round match to win a three-game thriller.
He will next take on Wong Wing Ki Vincent, the 12th seed from Hong Kong, China, who scored a surprise win over fourth seed and another Chinese player Shi Yuqi, the beaten finalist in this year's All England Open.
Olympic champion Chen Long scored his third straight-set victory, beating 13th seed Ajay Jayaram of India 21-11, 21-10. He will fight for a semifinal berth against teammate and 10th seed Tian Houwei, who defeated Frenchman Brice Leverdez 21-14, 21-8.
Elsewhere, top seed Son Wan Ho of South Korea labored past Thailand's Tanongsak Saensomboonsuk 21-14, 17-21, 21-13. He will play eighth seed Srikanth Kidambi of India, a 21-14, 21-18 winner over Denmark's Anders Antonsen.
The other quarterfinal match pits Denmark's third seed Viktor Axelsen against sixth seed Chou Tien Chen of Chinese Taipei.
In the women's competitions, China's debutant Chen Yufei, the ninth seed, stunned top seed and world No. 2 Yamaguchi 21-18, 21-19.
The 19-year-old Chen, who won her first major title at last year's world junior championships, will next meet Thailand's eighth seed Ratchanok Intanon, who defeated another Chinese player Chen Xiaoxin 21-3, 21-9.
Fifth seed Sun Yu became the only other Chinese to survive the third round after sixth seed He Bingjiao was stopped by Finland's Kirsty Gilmour 21-14, 15-21, 21-16. Sun struggled to beat Spain's Beatriz Corrales 21-11, 19-21, 23-21.
Sun will play India's fourth seed V. Sindhu Pusarla on Friday.
Olympic champion Carolina Marin advanced with a 21-7, 21-11 victory over Mia Blichfeldt of Denmark. The third seed will next face seventh seed Nozomi Okuhara of Japan.
