Chinese New Year of Rooster celebrated by sinologists in Buc

BUCHAREST, Feb. 10 (Xinhua) -- Sinologists and other professionals have gathered at a Bucharest public library for an event celebrating the Chinese New Year of the Rooster.

Sinologist Anna Eva Budura, who spent 20 years in China, explained to the audience at the Thursday event the multiple connotations of the Chinese calendar.

The Year of the Rooster, beginning on Jan. 28, 2017 and ending on Feb. 15, 2018, is part of the calendar that organizes Chinese economic, social and cultural life.

Presenting aspects of the Chinese New Year, Budura said: "The new year has little to do with religion in China, and rather with agricultural celebrations and ancestors' commemoration, focused on family reunion."

"The purpose of celebrating the New Year is to remove the evil from the house and to bring happiness and good luck. The Chinese consider that those born in the celebrated year should wear something red," she added.
